Shopping Overview

Newcastle is one of Australia’s biggest cities, behind the major capitals right up there for population and metropolitan area.

While there are a number of big shopping centers with the usual brands there are a number of smaller unique shops and funky shopping precincts that are worth a look.

The first tow places to head to are The Junction and Darby Street, Newcastle city centre also has a few worth looking at too.

Darby Street is probably the best shopping destination in Newcastle, it’s got a good mix of eclectic local designers and some groovy cafes to rest your feet after you’ve shopped the place down.

Being Australia’s second oldest city you will find some interesting antique stores. These are mainly located around Hamilton, Mayfield and Islington.

If you want to find the largest shopping centre then head for Westfield in Kotara.

Darby St Precinct

Darby St Precinct is conveniently situated just 5 minutes from Newcastle Harbour and Foreshore. Offering a diverse, friendly, and very relaxed cosmopolitan destination.

Darby St consists of over 20 cafes and outdoor dining spots. These Includes some award winning restaurants that are well priced. Shoppers make sure you lookout for some unique fashion boutiques including (Intake, Abicus, Ramjet).

You will even spot an art and gift galleries. The Newcastle Regional gallery is located just down the road. There are also photography studios, home-wares, everyday living, music and even professional services.

Westfield Kotara

If your after some brand names and want a full range of services that only a massive shopping centre can give to then head for Westfield Kotara.

There are over 120 specialty. The centre has recently had a makeover so it’s not an uncomfortable place to shop. It’s fully enclosed two level regional centre, located approximately 7kms south-west of Newcastle CBD.

There are also your big department stores including: David Jones, Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, The Reject Shop, Best and Less, Toys R Us and Wild Surf Co. With this much choice there is something for everyone!

Marketown Shopping Centre

Marketown Shopping Centre is a supermarket based neighborhood shopping centre located at the gateway to the Newcastle City Centre. It’s quite new and not too big to easily get in there and do a spot of shopping and get out again.

It’s got over 32 specialty stores and one level of retail shops catering for all your shopping needs. Servicing not only the city centre but also the densely populated and growing inner suburbs of Newcastle. One very handy thing is Coles (open 24 hours a day 7 days a week).

Honeysuckle

It’s one of the best if not the best place to have a stroll down at the waterfront and visit a few small boutique shops and galleries. There is a lot of new development at Honeysuckle so don’t expect too many shops at the moment but there will be a steady increase in the next few years.
