Why go there?

Cairns has some of the best beaches in all of Queensland and is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef which is world famous, this makes it the perfect location to use as a base for exploring the reef. With a population of over 120 thousand people it’s a big enough city to have everything you need.

Some of the attractions include the Esplanade - great for kids and adults alike, you can swim or play beach volleyball, they even have a skate park. Maybe looking at some art might be your cup of tea, Cairns Regional Gallery is in the city and is a very high standard. You could also visit the Flecker Botanic Gardens, Sugarworld Gardens and the Tanks Arts Centre.

Warning: Visit Cairns for a day and you might want to live there! It’s been judged one of Australia’s most livable cities.

There are many things to do in and around Cairns, Here is a list of the most popular things to do.

  • Visit the great Barrier reef
    Most people pick Cairns as their base for exploring the world renowned Great Barrier Reef. Cairns the the biggest city near the reef so it makes an ideal location for setting here and staying a while either before your trip of after.

  • Flecker Botanic Gardens, The gardens are just 4km north of Cairns CBD and include the Flecker gardens. This is well worth checking out, it includes a rain forest which have exciting tropical plants. leave a few hours to enjoy a number of different walks you can do, such as the Aboriginal Plant use Garden and the Gondwanna Heritage Garden, this traces the evolution of the wet tropics from 425 million years ago!
  • Cairns Regional Gallery, This gallery is the only one in Tropical North Queensland and showcases 30 exhibition yearly. It features a strong focus on local indigenous artists, admission is only $5.
  • Eating Out Did you know that the restaurants in Cairns are some of teh best in Australia? that’s right, the climate and tourists make this a prime destination for some of the best chiefs in the world. Cairns also has the best access to outstanding fresh local produce, especially the seafood. Some of the international cuisine includes: Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Italian, Swiss, Vegetarian and Seafood.
  • Adventure Central Being a major holiday destination for thousands of visitors there is plenty of fun activities to do, choosing is the hardest part. These activities include: Sky rail, Scenic trail, Bungy jumping, Sky diving, Helicopter tours, Horse Riding, Hot Air Ballooning, and even jungle safaris.
